Trane Technologies
Systems Engineering Co-Op, 2019
The Trane business unit of the Ingersoll Rand Company specializes in HVAC systems, with my work revolving mostly around water chillers. Following the launch of the new Agility Product Line in 2018, I managed the early launch containment testing to verify predicted performance. I then analyzed that test data to identify performance and reliability concerns as well as optimize market factors. This allowed for increased reliability and performance consistency of the new Agility products.
Throughout my time at Trane, I also managed a project to replace and upgrade the instrumentation in the 4 production test loops. This involved understanding why critical digital pressure transducers were erratically failing through various tests and discovering a deviating electrical grounding procedure. I then directed $43,600 of investment to upgrade the instrumentation in the production test loops, increasing the ability to detect faults.
To maximize utilization of in house material supply, I evaluated the performance and substituted $13,700 of obsoleted tubes into existing units. This technical analysis also allowed me to contribute to the creation of packed stock units. Evaluating and employing these tubes deemed obsolete for the packed stock units allowed $65,600 worth of evaporator tubes and $27,700 worth of condenser tubes to contribute to production chillers.
Halfway through my time at Trane, we discovered a miscalculation in one of the drive motor parameters. I then led a cross-functional team encompassing engineering, quality, and procurement to correct the miscalculation. Our work impacted 60 units in production as well as in the field, saving $11,000 in future corrections. I also contributed to the onboarding of my group's summer interns around this time, passing on my knowledge of our systems, platforms, and products.
Recognizing an opportunity for improvement, I proposed a project to develop a process of analyzing unstructured text data. The construction, deployment, and maintenance of a python program now produces analytics primarily to identify connections between unit issues and can also be applied to similar data structures. Additionally, I developed a set of general-purpose automation scripts to increase the efficiency of repetitive tasks by up to 48%.
